We are an LGBTQ+ Welcoming Congregation
Bradford Community Church UU is proud to be recognized by the Unitarian Universalist Association (UUA) as a Welcoming Congregation to lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, gender fabulous and queer/questioning (LGBTQ) individuals, families, and communities. At Bradford UU, we work to promote acceptance, inclusion, understanding, and equity for all— including LGBTQ+ persons of all ages, abilities, colors, and genders—within our congregation and in society at large.
The Unitarian Universalist Association expects all of its member congregations to welcome and value diversity of sexual and affectional orientation, gender identity and expression, race and ethnicity, ability/disability, class and educational background, age, and citizenship status.
Theoretical welcome is very different, however, from lived welcome. Recognizing this, Bradford UU endeavored to meet certain criteria in order to be designated a Welcoming Congregation by the UUA. The Welcoming Congregation Program is a volunteer program for Unitarian Universalist congregations that want to take intentional steps to become more welcoming and inclusive of people with marginalized sexual orientations and gender identities.
First launched in 1990, the program grew out of an understanding that widespread prejudices and ignorance about lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer/questioning (LGBTQ) people existed within Unitarian Universalism, resulting in the exclusion of LGBTQ people from our congregations.
Bradford Community Church, having been recognized as a Welcoming Congregation in the year 2000, is proud to be among the 66% of U.S. Unitarian Universalist congregations which have been so designated.
