Green Sanctuary
What Is A Green Sanctuary?
Green Sanctuary defines a congregation that lives out its commitment to the Earth by creating a sustainable lifestyle for its members as individuals and as a faith community. Sustainable living is about choosing to live in a way that nurtures life, builds relationships, and rejects material consumption as as the sole determinant of happiness.
Bradford Community Church Unitarian Universalist reached Green Sanctuary status within the Unitarian Universalist Association in 2003 and reaffirmed that status in 2025. We chose twelve action steps to be completed over four focus areas.
Those areas are: worship, environmental justice, religious education and sustainable living.
Our Green Sanctuary's goals are...
-
to build awareness of eco-justice issues and to promote eco-justice in our world.
-
to generate commitment for personal lifestyle changes.
-
to motivate UUs to action on environmental issues.
-
to build a connection between spiritual practice and environmental consciousness.
-
to build awareness of and rectify environmental injustices.
More recently, our focus has been on significantly lowering our carbon footprint by 2030, and working toward net zero by 2050.

Our committee is actively involved with the Pringle Nature Center, located within Bristol Woods County Park. The center is a regional resource where people of all ages can experience nature, environmental education, conservation and stewardship. More information about the Center can be found at pringlenc.org.

Earth Day
Each year our committee helps develop the church service on the nearest Sunday to Earth Day.
Recently we have formed a "Friends of the Green Sanctuary" team within our church. This team has plans to attend various environmental programs in the community, work on removal of invasive species at Pringle Nature Center, and participate in environmental projects in the city and county of Kenosha.
